Message when choosing a fuel for high performance application is to make sure it suppresses detonation, while not "over octaning". Better to over octane the car than run it without enough octane (But way too much octane can actually hurt performance.). My guess is that the "new" 103 unleaded fuel is similar to the previous 103 unleaded. Don't get hung up on the compression ratio that it is rated for, as a forced induction engine completely changes the engine's effective compression (ie. You may have a base compression of 8.5/1, but with 20 psi of boost may raise the effective compression to 13:1). As to the different octane ratings, I know that the two measurements are RON (research octane) and MON (motor octane). To quote VP, " Motor octane more accurately represents a high performance or racing application. The motor octane machine runs at a higher RPM, hotter temperature, and more timing, thus putting more stress on the fuel. Do not be fooled by high research or average (R+M/2) octane numbers". I found the folks at the VP tech dept. to be very helpful and made recommendations based on my set-up. Most of the guys I race with who use unleaded race fuel, either use the VP 103 unleaded, the Sunoco 104 unleaded or go for more octane with the leaded fuel (I favor the C-12, while others, with N2O use the C-16). I didn't look at your profile, but if you are running stock turbos with the boost turned up and advanced timing, the 103 should be fine. If you are running high boost, advanced timing, and aggressive tuning you may want to use the C-12, C-14+, or C-16. They even make a 120+ octane fuel labeled VP Import that will give you more octane than you'll know what to do with, and it costs $100 for a 5 gallon container. Give them a call and pick their brains for the best fuel for your application. Their World Headquarters phone number is 210 635-7744. They have a staggering array of fuels and have them send you a brochure to get thoroughly confused. Good luck, Mark
